The ASA National Waterpolo Team lost the game for the 5th and 6th place against Slovenia by 6 -11.
Reports from Lugano state that the team led by Coach Sergio Afric lost concentration on various occassions as only three goals were made from 14 man-ups. Inspite of all this the Malta team has to be praised for finishing at such a high sixth place of the European B Championships played in Lugano.
Malta lost the first session 1-3 and then won the second session 3-2 and then continued to lose the third and fourth session 0-2 and 2-4 respectively.
The goal scorers for Malta were four goals by Niki Lanzon, and one goal each by Steve Camilleri and Paul Privitera.
The ASA National Waterpolo Team returns today at 1pm from Lugano.
Speaking from Lugano, the ASA President Dr Austin Sammut said that he was very proud of the Malta squad saying “Sixth ranking in the European B ranking is a very prestigious result for our country especially considering the disadvantages we face at international level. Infact these championships have shown up the shortcomings Malta has at this level.
There is certainly scope for the retiming and restructuring of our National league and emphasis must be placed on the National team, its training schedule and our increased involvement in the international circuit.
A lot of thinking has to be done by all clubs together at ASA Council level.”
