The European Masters Swimming championships are being held in Cadiz-Seville Spain, this week.

Masters swimming is very popular throughout Europe and the world and attracts many competitors ranging in age from 25 to 100. The competitors are split into four-year age bands starting at 25-29yrs and progressing up to the oldest swimmers, who have in the past competed in the 100-104yrs age group.

This year Malta will have one swimmer taking part. Simon Zammit, who has been an avid masters swimmer and Triathlete for the last few years, will take part in the 5km open water event next Sunday in the 45-49 year age group.

Simon has been a big supporter of local swimming for a number of years now: his son David is now a member of the national swimming team and Simon himself represents the Sliema club on the ASA swimming board.

Simon trains with national swimming coach, Andy Colbourn, and has made great improvements this year placing in the top two male swimmers in all of the Birkirkara St Joseph open water swimming series competitions in which he took part in, as preparation for the Europeans.

Simon also uses the services of Triton Sport Ltd to ensure his training and preparation is fully optimised. These are the same services used by the extremely successful national swimming team this year.
