On the Monday following Father’s Day, the father of the Diocese and Fr Joe Abela had cordial meetings. It seems, and so it transpired, that Fr Abela left.

For the record, Fr Abela had been on the job for a number of years. He managed his duty successfully and with a passion. His vast and long established experience in this field was not only a credit to himself but most likely of benefit to the country.

Personally I feel insulted! Surely Fr Abela has been hurt and certainly discouraged.

From what I have read, it seems to me that the Archbishop’s council might be over influential, have difference of opinion, have been discriminative, partial, prejudiced and might even lack professionalism. I really wish to understand how such situations in the Archbishop’s Curia council are discussed, decided and executed. How pure are the council’s views? What is the level of communication?

For instance, I very much doubt and pretty much wonder if Rev. Fr Paul Cremona, in his new position as Archbishop, has ever communicated with Fr Abela at least in relation to this field of work. If he did not, it would be a pitiful situation!

After getting to know Fr Abela well, one would discover that he is truly a man of God, under the skin that is! Without giving anyone significant or the least satisfaction, he lives the Cross with love. Yes, I believe he maintains a strong relationship with Him. Bold enough to take the witness stand in his line of duty, it hurts to see such a person being rejected!

Legally, would the Curia be right or wrong regarding its actions? Or rather, would anybody try to testify in court if one knows one could endanger his position or find himself sacked? Could it not seem that the council may have had intentions, to clear Joe out of the way and use a possible opportune situation or excuse?

I strongly appeal to the Archbishop to seriously reconsider his final decision, which can make the difference.

Truly, Fr Abela is enduring suffering even through he has done right thing. Surely, God will bless him for it.
