Malta 0
Spain 13
Malta’s girls suffered a heavy defeat against a superior Spanish side yesterday as they made their debut in the World Cup qualifiers at Ta’ Qali’s Centenary Stadium.
There was no doubt about Spain’s vast superiority. This was well known well before the kick-off and it was widely predicted that the Maltese girls would be facing an arduous task.
The match had no story as Spain were in a class of their own with the Maltese girls, unfortunately, never matching them.
The Spaniards had already wrapped up the encounter by the end of the first half when they took an 8-0 lead. Then they eased a bit in the second half when they scored another five for a final scoreline of 13-0.
Very rarely could the Malta side move upfield and it was only once that the Spanish goalie was called into action through a Rachel Cuschieri shot a few minutes before the end.
For the record, Spain scored their goals through Meseguer, Martin 4, Bermudez 3, Romero 3 and Boquete 2.
The third goal scored by Romero came following a partial penalty save by Malta goalie Costantino on Martin’s effort. She hit home the rebound.
Malta coach Pierre Brincat made use of these girls for this encounter:
S. Costantino, R. Chircop, M. Azzopardi (K. Parnis), N. Pace, C. Fenech (C. Zammit), R. Cuschieri, R. D’Agostino, M. Debono, Y. Carabott, D. Theuma, E. Xuereb (G. Zahra).
