Addressing the press yesterday, Nicky Dimech, the Sliema mayor, who is also the Sliema W. vice-president, said that all the councillors of Sliema had decided in favour of such awards.

The first to benefit will be Sliema W. for having won the Super Cup. They – and the players – will be presented with a glass trophy next Tuesday during a special ceremony at the club.

Dimech added: “A second presentation is also planned to be held soon to honour Sliema ASC, who won the honours in the summer game of waterpolo. We feel that it is only right to reward such persons who honour the town with their sporting achievements. We simply hope that such a gesture will be followed by other Local Councils.”
