Malta Independent Wednesday, 23 September 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Following the decision of Max Mosley not to seek a further term of office after 16 years as President of FIA, MMF chairman Tonio Cini, recently travelled to meet the two candidates contesting this post.

Mosley’s nominated successor, Jean Todt, President of eSafety Aware, and ex Ferrari CEO, reiterated that his agenda is an exciting combination of innovation, excellence and teamwork.

If elected he will commit himself on these three campaign themes and a commitment to a comprehensive review of the FIA statutes which will enhance the transparency, democracy and efficiency of FIA. “This review process would be to the benefit of all FIA member clubs as it would bring a wider range of experience to the activities, allowing us to share knowledge and improve the quality and relevance of our work on behalf of mobility and motor sport,” stated Todt.

World Rally Championship driver in 1981 and four times Paris Dakar Rally Champion, Ari Vatanen gave details about his “Together we can” manifesto. Changes are needed as FIA should serve better its deeper roots. Vatanen said: “While many of the larger clubs may be less dependent on the FIA, we should pay special attention to smaller clubs that seek FIA assistance. A special task force will be created to plan a continuous programme of supporting activities from the FIA to these developing clubs”.

Cini on the other hand gave details about the difficulties the local motoring community is facing. He briefed them on the success our members are having especially when they go and compete abroad, and that our country needs the support in developing Motor Sport by means of more education, training and investing in new opportunities to further increase the interest in this sport.

While handing them booklets and DVD about Malta, Cini invited Jean Todt and Ari Vatanen to Malta. Todt promised to visit Malta during the first year of his presidency if elected, while Vatanen explained that his visit will be the way to keep contact with the roots of FIA.

The FIA presidential election will be held on 23 October, at the FIA Headquarters in Paris.
