Censoring Adverts

Malta Independent Sunday, 4 October 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

The international recession is the result of the flouting of morals. However, it seems that this lesson has not sunk in for many.

I agree with correspondents who are up in arms about the bad effect sensational adverts on private Italian TV stations broadcast in Malta are

having.

The spill over effects of such unprotested adverts by the regulator do not just aim at selling a car (Renault for example) but also at promoting and portraying behaviour that is not acceptable to the majority of people of these islands. In a market saturated with car offers, given the international downward demand, concerned consumers should make it a point to shun purchasing such advertised and much promoted vehicles. After all when second-hand good quality cars sell for less, I am sure that switching to a substitute should not be a problem.

Then perhaps local agents and their principles might rethink some of their advertising strategies. Something along this line was posted recently on a website that featured this year’s Frankfurt’s Car Show.

Media adverts have a function to perform in that they provide information and try to make it stick as much as possible in the mind of consumers. However, doubtful adverts as the one mentioned above and another for a breakfast food advertising immoral beach attire printed in local magazines, would be withdrawn if enough of us showed our disapproval by purchasing rival brands!
