Reading Alfred Mifsud’s latest contribution (TMID, 2 October) I came to the conclusion that, although still 58, age is taking its toll on him. To say the least the article ‘Where has quality gone?’ was pathetic. Such articles show that quality of similar contributions in many of our newspapers leaves much to be desired. He was only right in asking where has quality gone. Yes, the quality of similar contributions has gone down the drain.
If one had to summarise his arguments, Alfred Mifsud concluded that one had to judge the government’s achievements by looking at pavements, St George’s Square and so on. He seems to forget the amount of many more important projects which embellished Malta and Gozo. Furthermore I can assure Mr Mifsud that in three years’ time he will definitely qualify for his pension, he will still have free hospitalisation and, like Germany where Angela Merkel consolidated her previous government, and Portugal, where the Socialists lost their absolute majority, the electorate in Malta is intelligent enough to choose again a government which has always enhanced the Island’s standard of living for the last 22 years and the many years still to come.
It was only during the 22 months of Labour government that quality of living went from bad to worse. And God forbid if we leave the reins of government in the hands of an inexperienced leader that looks more like Alfred Sant than anyone else. Mr Mifsud tried to paint everything black but exposed his hidden agenda. He said that the Nationalist government “is impotent, expired and rotten from the core with internal disagreement”.
Who’s talking? As if he does not know that within the Labour movement a tsunami is taking place where heads are rolling left, right and centre among great dissent from all around. As if he doesn’t know that Labour is playing for the gallery without offering any feasible solution. As if he doesn’t know that, thanks to government’s intervention, more than 2,500 jobs were saved and unemployment is among the lowest in Europe.
Alfred Mifsud is pampering Joseph Muscat hoping that ‘the Nationalist government has practically abandoned all hopes of getting re-elected.’ It is the same tune sung before the 2008 election, the result of which left Alfred Mifsud and Co. dumbfounded. Maybe he’s hoping that Joseph Muscat will lure him as one of his advisers. e40,000 are quite attractive, eh?
Renowned as a financial wizard, Alfred Mifsud should know that the IMF and other financial institutions have praised the government for its timely interventions to tackle the worldwide recession. Bigger nations have bigger scars that left them reeling in the financial turmoil. But with all the government’s inefficiencies (as Alfred Mifsud is harping) we are much better off than they are!
I suggest that it is still too early for cheap party propaganda to try to convince the electorate. Time will tell and these gloomers and doomers will again be left stunned when 2013 comes along. Alfred Mifsud’s sermon only fits One TV!
