I refer to the well-thought-out article by Hugh Peralta (TMIS, 4 October) in which he showed the differences between our country’s political milestones over the last 50 years or so.

Various correspondents have made the point that, had independence not been achieved on 21 September 1964, none of our political leaders could have achieved anything for this country, and they are quite right.

However, some came up with the inspired idea of finding a modus vivendi for National Day and, in order to achieve national consensus, suggested that this should be 8 September.

It should be pointed out that independence was achieved on 21 September 1964.

As shown in Section 124 (Definitions) of the Constitution:

“124. (1) In this Constitution, unless the context otherwise requires –‘Act of Parliament’ means any law made by Parliament…

‘the appointed day’ means 21 September 1964”.

This indicates that, from this date, Malta became an independent nation. Following this political milestone, no other date has ever been enshrined in the Constitution as “the appointed day”, be it Republic Day, Freedom Day or 8 September.

It would be a great pity if our former or current political personalities failed to recognise the facts of history.
