Social Affairs Committee Discusses separation difficulties

Malta Independent Thursday, 12 November 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Parliament's Social Affairs Committee discussed complaints and proposals lodged by persons whose marriage has failed, for difficulties to be improved. Meanwhile, the interests of children during and after separation procedures were discussed.

Many parents who would have gone through separation cases warn their children against getting married. This culture may lead to weak families and should therefore change. The government must employ all possible means to assist the country’s social fabric and instil family values.

The Social Affairs Committee suggested that obligations listed in a couple's separation contract are to be followed scrupulously. Improvement in the social benefits system to prevent separated persons or their children from falling into relative poverty, was suggested. The need of a better and stronger judicial system in relation to the Family Court, especially where children's interests are involved, and the monitoring of a number of separation cases, again to ensure children's interests, were brought up.

Children's trauma during separation processes was noted.

The complaints and proposals put forward by individuals will be tabled in parliament and will be available on http://www.parliament.gov.mt/paperslaiddetails?id=3027, for further discussion.
