Marsaxlokk 4

Melita 1

Roderick Bajada scored two goals yesterday in Marsaxlokk’s emphatic 4-1 win over newly promoted Melita on the opening day of the BOV First Division League.

Marsaxlokk, demoted to this Division for disciplinary reasons, were clearly the more experienced side and although Melita fought gamely and even took the lead on the quarter hour, through one of their best players, Julian Galea, Marsaxlokk came back to equalise by the half hour and then scored three goals in the second half to win convincingly.

Marsaxlokk had most of the possession, trying to open up the Melita defence from the flanks mainly from the likes of Deanov and Pullicino with the Melita rearguard most of the time being stretched to the limit.

Inspired by the fine form of Bajada and Pullicino, Marsaxlokk capitalised on Melita keeper Sapiono’s failure to hold a Camenzuli cross, as Roderick Bajada headed in the equaliser.

Hard as they tried to defend stoutly, Melita were undone by three more goals after the restart.

On 53 minutes, Danilov was left unmarked on Bajada’s pass to put Marsaxlokk ahead.

The Southseasiders, added further goals from Peter Pullicino on the hour and another from Roderick Bajada, seven minutes from time, as he flicked in Deanov’s perfect cross.
