A new club with the name of Qormi Wasps has emerged in local rugby this season. It was the idea of a few old Sharks players and coaches who felt that their club needed re-branding and rebuilding; so they set about putting together a new club with full new committee new coaching staff and a lot of new players to bring a new image to the locality and the club.
The facelift to the club began by coming up with a new name, which is Wasps and this, in the rugby world, is a renowned name as that of London Wasps RFC of the Guinness premiership in England.
Research was done into the history of Qormi and we found that there was a basketball team called Wasps many moons ago and what true fitting name it is with the colours of Qormi being Yellow and Black.
The next step was to select and bring on board the members of the committee and staff who think there is a bright future ahead for this club.
Stanley Newbold was asked to be the president and he accepted with great honour after seeing the hard work that was already being put into the structure and foundations of the club.
Following Stanley's acceptance for the president's role, the treasurer and home bar to the club Victor Camilleri (Caccu Social Club) was then put in place; Maggie West is the club secretary and is truly enjoying her role.
Head coach Sam Ramage, who has 22 years experience in the game, was appointed back in June and is currently recruiting players to his already growing youth U-17's section and senior squad while continuing to coach two times a week at Floriana hockey pitch. He is also keeping a good eye on his upcoming talented players during the weekend games.
Assistant coach Anthony Micallef was also brought on as with his role of development officer for the Malta rugby league, is a huge aspect in the game.
The club thanked all its sponsors, that is, Heritage Insurance Management, Budweiser, Qormi Council, Cape Holdings Ltd, Caccu Social Club, Team Sport and The Shelter Wine Bar & Bistro.
