I quote from Giovanni Bonello’s Histories of Malta, Vol 10, pp. 203/4 and p. 210.

“Prime Minister Mulroney, referring to the war internment of civilians without charges or trial, qualified this as ‘one of the most shameful episodes in the history of our country. We cannot change the past, but we must, as a nation, have the courage to face up to these historical facts... what happened... must never be allowed to happen again in this country’”. On 22 September, 1988 he publicly apologised to and begged forgiveness of its wartime internati.

P. 210: “I (Giovanni Bonello) cannot even start comparing the wrongs of Nazism and Fascism to those of British imperialism during the armed conflict. While the ideals of democracies occasionally faltered during the war, those of totalitarianism never did; they persevered in the destruction of all that was wholesome and decent...”

If only the present leaders of the modern PL could say the same...
