Elusive II Medbank, a Beneteau 45, skippered by Arthur Podesta and sponsored by Mediterranean Bank, once again won its class in IRC as well as in ORC in this year’s edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Mediterranean Bank has been sponsoring the Elusive team for the past four years with great satisfaction.
The relationship between the bank and Mr Podesta was forged on the principles of professionalism, integrity and commitment to succeed. Besides the Rolex Middle Sea Race, the sponsorship also covers other regattas on the calendar of the Royal Malta Yacht Club.
The Elusive Medbank team has always been competitive and only two weeks ago added another success by winning the Beneteau FIRST trophy, as well as the overall IRC Trophy.
Mr Podesta, a past commodore of the Royal Malta Yacht Club has a legendary place in the history of the Rolex Middle Sea Race. He has participated in every race since 1968, when he was part of the winning crew on Josian. He has also been on the winning boat twice, in 1970 on Tikka and in 1983 on Saudade. His best result as skipper is a toss up between second in class on Morning Breeze in 1971 and third overall on his previous Elusive Medbank in 2008.
Mr Podesta’s core crew is made up of his daughter Maya (9 RMSRs) and his two sons Aaron (9 RMSRs) and Christoph (8 RMSRs).
This year, along with other regulars like Mark Vella and Paul Borg Cardona, he introduced crewmember Andrew Bernard to a race which he is proud to have been associated with since its inception in 1968. Podesta considers himself a winner every year he gets to the start line, and more so nowadays that he has his three children with him.
