Dear World Leaders,
I never imagined that you were going to let us down so much at the Copenhagen climate change summit. After all, the event was being promoted and labelled as the event of the century! The people of the world had every right to expect that an equitable compromise and agreement would be reached to protect the climate. However, you ended the summit without agreeing to any binding cuts in greenhouse gas emissions that scientists believe need to be implemented. Real actions were expected and, indeed, need to be undertaken because they are stronger than words!
The US, EU and Australia – the three most industrialized regions in the world, held the rest of the world hostage. Being that they are responsible for the largest ‘ecological foot print’ they have to cut down on emissions and excessive energy use. Their actions should direct the world in a cleaner and more environmentally friendly way. It is by their actions that less developed nations will follow. If imminent action is not taken by these three, the future of mankind could be at serious risk.
The world is in “your hands”. These countries have to change their future in order to shape the rest of ours. Words are simply no longer enough – decisive and definitive action is what is needed. Leaders must step up and show real leadership by committing to a sound climate treaty. We had all hoped that all the pressure that had brought the world leaders to the table would lead them to reach an agreement, but this was not so.
Please, ‘world leaders’, in many cases your constituents have elected you to take action for the betterment of mother earth and for ensuring the continued survival of the human race! We are waiting for real action. Stop playing with words because we are tired of it!
I have the honour to remain your Excellencies most humble and obedient servant.
