I refer to Prof. Muscat’s letter entitled “Deportation not a crime against humanity” (TMIS, 13 December). Prof. Muscat would have us believe that all those that were interned and deported in the Second World War were fascists. How far that is from the truth. If he looks at the facts, he would find that most of those, including most but not all of the top persons in the Nationalist Party, were staunch liberals, including the leader Enrico Mizzi.

Being pro-Italian, as in culture, had nothing to do with being pro-fascists.

On the contrary, the Maltese organised in the Union of Maltese Fascists were in fact strongly pro-English and they looked to Mosley and not to Mussolini for their inspiration.

We find it so easy to condemn what happened in history when in fact we should be very careful with what we state and write.
