Our dear Prime Minister paid a visit to Gozo recently. I have no idea how he has the nerve to show up here in Gozo. In front of two dozen or so get-what-they-need and get-what-they-want faithful, he boasted about the millions of euro that his government is going to invest in Gozo. If you ask me, we heard all this bull before. Truth is that in almost 30 years his government has done very little for Gozo.
People are squeezed like an orange with the utility bills. Apart from about four kilometres of new roads, which took a lot longer than they were supposed to and cost a lot more that first projected, all roads in Gozo are in a disgusting state.
Bedrock had better roads! True that some work is being done on Ta’ Pinu road, Santa Marija road in Marsalforn and another part of the Mgarr road. About time too! But I’ll bet my last penny that will take a lot longer to complete and will cost a lot more than projected. Rubbish dumps are everywhere; the sign that Villa Rundle is going to be rebuilt has been there for about four years. The sign was changed lately but still there is nothing going on. Foreign investment in Gozo is non existent and the few small local companies operating from the Xewkija Industrial estate employ very few people and the area is in a dilapidated state, as is the area where the MMU used to be.
Shouldn’t the new Law Courts and/or a new public library be built there? There is lots of room even for a parking area. The school being built in Victoria looks like a concrete box and tourism in Gozo is in a very bad state. A bunch of hotels closed in the last few year and hundreds of apartment are being built instead. Can the Prime Minister please tell us how many people these new, huge apartment blocks are going to employ? That toothless poodle called the GTA is doing absolutely nothing to improve things. It’s run by absolutely inept people. Gozo is not advertised abroad at all. Malta is, and on many occasions they use pictures from Gozo. What’s wrong with advertising Malta and Gozo together? Other countries do. Like Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago and probably others. So why not Malta and Gozo.
What is the MTA afraid of? With us adopting the euro things got a lot worse if you ask me. British people have to spend
40 per cent more than before to go holiday in Malta or Gozo. With us joining the EU I have not seen an ounce of improvement anywhere. All we’re seeing are the huge, monstrous dairy farm structures. Is that what the EU is all about?
We people of Gozo have no voice! The only person that we thought would be a strong voice for Gozo is working in Malta for the Prime Minister and he does not care about the people who voted him in office. The people in Gozo have had more than enough. I’m afraid that the PN, the party I have voted for all my life, is heading for a disaster that will take it 50 years to recuperate from.
