Melita Beat Marsa to go top of winter league

On Saturday the Marsa CC took on Melita Betfair CC in the Winter league.

Melita won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Ronnie Sacco and Dave Borg opened the batting for the Marsa team. Sacco was the first to go out, he was bowled by Hobbs for one run from 20 balls. Javed Shah was next in and next out, also being bowled by Hobbs, making seven runs from seven balls including one boundary.

Borg went on to top score with 18 runs before being bowled. The next three wickets (D Grech two runs, John Farrugia two runs and Patrick Brooke no runs) fell to the bowling of Hewitt who was the main wicket taker for Melita, ending with bowling figures of three wickets for three runs from three overs including one maiden.

George Roberts was run out for four runs and Eric Brook remained unbeaten on four runs. Mike Caruana was the last batsman who was out making 13 runs from 34 balls including two fours. Andy Lenard and Anthony Roberts were also wicket takers for their team.

The Marsa team totalled a mere 55 runs and did not face the full 20 overs. This was the lowest score of the tournament beating their previous low score of 64.

It took the Melita batsmen 14 overs to reach their target with the Marsa bowlers bowling very well. Again Dave Borg and Ronnie Sacco bowled well for their team with Sacco being the only wicket take with three.

Tim Edwards and John Rusher opened the batting for Melita. Rusher was first to being bowled. Edwards went on to retire making 12 runs. Malcolm Crabbe and Joy Ghoseroy both made 13 runs before going out. Anthony Roberts (one run not out) and Justin Brooke (12 runs not out including three fours) made sure of the winning runs.

Melita earned eight points for the win which put them on top of the ladder with 16 points, Krishna CC second with 10 points and Marsa who have finished their games are third with eight points.

The two remaining games are between Krishna CC and Melita Betfair CC. Next Saturday the game will be at 10am. Krishna need to win to have a chance to keep their claws on the Winter Shield.

In the morning the Marsa Colts and Krishna Colts met for their second game. The Marsa team batted first and totalled 53 runs with Martina Caruana top scoring with 17 runs and Adam Caruana 15 runs.

In reply Krishna made the runs and levelled the series at one-all. Thomas Rusher top scored with 20 runs and Freddie May was next with 16 runs. For Marsa the straightest bowler was Amy Caruana.
