Volleyball: Flyers Depiro, Valletta Consolidate top positions

Malta Independent Thursday, 11 February 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Flyers Depiro consolidated their top position in the Ladies’ First Division, with Paola Hibs Candy and Fleur de Lys winning their matches to stay close to them.

The latter two also have a game in hand over the top team. In the Men’s First Division, Valletta won their sixth match of the season, beating Sliema in three sets.

Women

Flyers Depo-Playvolley S 3-0

(25-18, 25-21, 25-11)

Flyers Depiro obtained their eighth win of the season with a solid performance against Playvolley Stars. In the first set Depiro immediately went out on the attack, not giving Playvolley the time to settle, and they were soon eight points ahead.

Playvolley managed to settle down, however the initial gap was too big to close down. However, they continued playing well in the second set, going 8-2 up at the first Technical Time out. However Flyers managed to catch up and eventually win this set to go 2-0 up.

The third set was pure formality for Flyers, and although Playvolley tried their very best, with Anna Aquilina being outstanding in defense, their opponents were too strong on the day.

Referees: Tony Sammut, David Bonnici.

Playvolley G.-Fleur de Lys 0-3

(8-25, 10-25, 8-25)

Bottom placed Playvolley Galaxy found the going very tough against a Fleur de Lys side which was completely superior in every aspect of the game.

Coach Dalton Caruana tried to encourage his young athletes throughout the match, however it was tough playing against a much more experience and technical side.

Sarah El Gasi, Fleur de Lys’ setter, made the best use of her attackers, with the rest of the team matching up with effective attacks.

Referees: Nello Calleja, Alex Spiteri.

Southend-Paola Hibs Candy 0-3

(17-25, 17-25, 20-25)

Southend offered a good show against current champions Paola Hibs Candy, with the latter having some trouble to overcome a solid team.

Carmen Cortis, Paola’s middle player, had to opt out of this match due to illness, and her team took some time to settle down.

Southend did their very best throughout the whole match, especially in the third set, however too many mistakes in reception and defense undermined an otherwise good performance.

Kris Croker should build on this performance in preparation for the last match in the regular season and the playoffs.

Referees: Nello Calleja, Deborah Louise Farrugia.

Men

Valletta Mapei-Sliema 3-0

(25-21, 25-21, 25-15)

Valletta Mapei showed why they should be currently considered the best male team around, with a very solid performance against a Sliema side that has lost some of the effectiveness shown at the beginning of the season, especially after losing the services of Bulgarian Ivan Gintchev.

On their hand Valletta obtained their sixth win out of six matches, and it would be very difficult for the other teams to stop their march towards winning this season’s title.

Referees: Nadia Tagliaferro, Alexandra Meier.

Juniors

Mini Volley Girls: Playvolley - Fleur De Lys – Paola 2-1.

Standings: Flyers 19, Paola 18, Playvolley 13, Southend 7, Fleur De Lys 6.
