GSK Alerts consumers to potential health risk from long-term excessive use of zinc-containing denture adhesives

Malta Independent Friday, 19 February 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is taking voluntary, precautionary action to end the supply of its zinc-containing denture adhesives because long-term excessive use presents a potential health risk. In Malta, GSK markets zinc-containing and zinc-free adhesives under the Corega “Ultra” brand.

GSK will transition to zinc-free versions of all affected variants. Zinc Free will be clearly shown on the new packaging.

Dr Howard Marsh, Chief Medical Officer, GSK Consumer Healthcare, commented, “The safety of our consumers is our primary concern. We are taking this action because we have become aware of potential health problems associated with the long-term excessive use of our zinc-containing denture adhesive products. These reports are very rare, given that several million people worldwide are users of the products. If anyone is concerned that they may have been using the product in excess they should stop using it, talk to their doctor and switch to a zinc-free alternative. Using too much adhesive might be a sign of ill-fitting dentures. Denture wearers should see their dentists regularly to check the fit of their dentures.”

Specific information for Malta is provided in the attached consumer advisory. Full information for each market is available on www.gsk.com
