Mepa Reform and suspension of development under appeal

Malta Independent Sunday, 21 February 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

I refer to the letter entitled “The Nadur Cemetery” (TMIS, 14 February).

Mepa will not go into the merits of this case given that the application is sub judice.

The authority would like to point out that with the new legislation proposed in the Mepa Reform, when there is a case of a development that falls either outside the designated area for development (ODZ) or in a scheduled property, the Environment and Planning Review Tribunal, which will replace the existent Planning Appeals Board, will be able to suspend the implementation of the development permit, in whole or in part, subject to the outcome of the appeal.

This measure will enhance the safeguards of citizens’ rights and improve the protection of land use.
