San Gwann 0
Mosta 1
After obtaining a surprise victory and qualification against Sliema Wanderers in the Anniversary Cup, Mosta found their winning ways even in the First Division League, beating bottom placed San Gwann thanks to a solitary goal scored by Mark Brincat mid-way through the second half.
Mosta's victory was a deserved one as the Blues created the better chances even missing a couple of sitters late in the game. Julian Vella had a great match for Mosta, with Victor Osobu once again among the best, as this foreign import is proving to be an asset for Mosta.
San Gwann were only a pale shadow of the team that did so well in their recent outings especially against Vittoriosa and Marsaxlokk. Yesterday they failed to make an impact and they never really worried Mosta's solid defence led by a brilliant Mark Brincat. San Gwann are now firmly at the bottom of the table with six points from ten matches as their position is now getting desperate to say the least.
After a relatively quiet period Mosta started to take control and on 19 minutes the Blues were very unlucky when Gilbert Martin received a good ball from Terence Vella, but his shot hit the base of the upright.
Eight minutes later Mosta's Victor Osobu passed towards Mark Briggs whose grounder was well blocked by Justin Spiteri. On the half hour a Mark Brincat header went inches high.
San Gwann's first real attempt came on 35 minutes when Leeroy Bonnet beat the offside trap and tested Mosta goalkeeper Jonathan Debono who saved in style. Two minutes later San Gwann went close again when Sergio Hili had an impressive run on the left flank and crossed towards Bonnet who shot slightly over the bar.
Five minutes from the break following a Mark Briggs freekick, Gilbert Martin hit the side netting from an acute angle. In their last attempt of the first half Mosta's Terence Vella beat a couple of defenders with his shot hitting the outer side of the base of the upright.
On the resumption Victor Osobu missed a sitter in front of Julian Spiteri following some good work by Terence Vella. The same Terence Vella went close again minutes after another solo effort and a Julian Vella freekick sailed over the bar.
From another identical freekick Mosta went ahead on 70 minutes. Julian Vella's shot slammed against the crossbar and from the rebound Mark Brincat's header finished at the back of the net.
Five minuets later Mosta should have wrapped up the match when Victor Osobu created havoc in the San Gwann defence and passed towards Gilbert Martin who missed a glorious chance from five metres.
Four minutes from time Mosta missed another sitter: this time it was substitute Lyden Micallef who shot over the bar from close range following a great move between Terence Vella and Victor Osobu.
