Siggiewi carved their name on the Shield for the fifth time, in six finals that they played in. They also have now beaten Bupa on five occasions this season. It was the Violets who held a lead until nearly the end of the opening session, but when Siggiewi went in front, the champions had to chase throughout the rest of the encounter. Their ailing was that they couldn't get near enough, to overturn the score, even though the Schembri brothers played their hearts out, but at the other end Siggiewi had Lee Ross and Marco Matijevic, to provide the impetus, as they forged in front. Bupa did creep nearer, when seemingly in an impossible position, but Siggiewi's free throws, in the last stages of the match, kept Bupa just enough away, to prevent any possible mishap.
Siggiewi recovered Antoine Costa for this final, after he had missed three previous matches. Bupa included Sam Pizzuto and Gerald Gambin, for a full formation.
Dirk Schembri began well for the champions, putting in his side's first three hoops, although Siggiewi had Lee Ross with a triple. Bupa went on to take a 10-5 lead, but Siggiewi retaliated with an 8-2 run, and a Peter Shoults trey, and grab a lead. This was quickly snuffed out, with points by Steve Schembri, including a triple. Siggiewi tucked in, and Karl Borg's trey started them off to another advantage, which they acquired. late in the session, with a second Ross triple. In the second period Robert Azzopardi's trey for Bupa had the two sides level, at 23-23. Siggiewi's reaction was a solid 12-0 run, with more triples, by Ross and Shoults. That opened up a good lead, but Bupa sank treys, by Alan Borg, and two by Dirk Schembri, to draw closer. Siggiewi then went into a double figure advantage, but Azzopardi's second triple whittled down bupa's deficit, and at the interval Siggiewi were on a 43-36 advantage.
After the break, and Bupa's opening hoop, Siggiewi were back, with a 7-0 run, and a third Shoults trey. Dirk Schembri was in the thick of the action, but Bupa were still at a distance, and Adrian Micallef's trey for Siggiewi kept his side in the driving seat. Bupa's efforts to draw closer met stiff resistance, as Siggiewi held on to a 58-43 advantage, at the start of the final quarter. Siggiewi were still extending their lead , and an 8-2 run gave them a maximum advantage, at 66-47. Bupa got stuck in, and a stifling press, with a 9-0 run, and a couple of Steve Schembri triples, had them on a near enough deficit. Bupa went nearer still, with a 66-73 score, after Schembri and Abraham Portelli treys, but when the Violets tried to stop the clock, Siggiewi made the necessary free throws, to seal the match, keeping their opponents, at a safe distance. It was all over for the champions, losing out on their second final, this season.
After the game the MBA President, Mag. Antonio Mizzi, presented the Shield to the Siggiewi captain, John Doughty, as his team and numerous supporters made merry.
