In financial parley it is not unusual to find a transposed use of the notion of the Easter egg gift into the concept of a special bonus, of a nest egg, of a tidy sum to cushion one. I think we could be instrumental in providing the means to aid a voluntary organisation, Arka Foundation, which is doing sterling work for life challenged people, people with disability. On an annual basis, if my memory serves me right, Arka Foundation has been hosting a TV fundraising marathon to help it along in its expenses. I think such an organisation as Arka Foundation deserves all the help we can give it in this annual large fundraising appeal, so that throughout the rest of the year it can concentrate on providing the assistance it was set up for to those members of our communities which for long or short stays prefer to take a respite in Gozo.

Arka Foundation’s TV fund raising marathon is one of the few broadcasts beamed from Gozo and in its style never tries to play on the emotions of televiewers but appeals to their maturity respectful of the dignity of those in its charge which are not used as bargaining chips to pull our heart strings and make us open up our purse!

I think the generosity of the Gozitans, Maltese and expats is demonstrated time and again in that while we may disagree on many subjects, the help extended to those in need never comes short. I think the fact that last year, His Excellency the newly installed President of the Republic, Dr George Abela’s first public activity was to cross over to Gozo and man one of the telephones at Arka Foundation’s fund raising marathon, speaks volumes about the regard in which the work of this organisation is held.
