Malta Independent Sunday, 28 March 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 16 years ago

HSBC is on the hunt for Malta’s premium business talent, as the European Business Awards 2010, sponsored by HSBC Commercial Banking, opens for entries across the EU.

Now in its fourth year, the European Business Awards is recognised as the hallmark of innovation, success and sustainability across the EU. The awards provide an opportunity for businesses of all sizes and across all sectors in the Maltese Islands to represent their country on a pan European scale across eight categories.

After a judging process led by Europe’s most respected business leaders, the winners will accept their accolades before an audience of over 400 of Europe’s top politicians, business leaders, entrepreneurs, business commentators and media at an awards ceremony at a premier European location in November.

Richard J Cottell, HSBC Malta Head of Commercial Banking, commented: “As we start to turn the corner from what has been an unprecedented difficult scenario for international businesses, we believe it is essential that we both acknowledge and celebrate the ingenuity that has enabled many companies to survive and often thrive in Malta during this time.

“Even though the international turmoil was not as severe in some countries, in others the financial uncertainty and fragility has left businesses with a great many challenges to overcome. However, we are seeing many businesses take valuable lessons from these experiences and employ new strategies to build better, stronger business models for the future. The European Business Awards provide an excellent platform to demonstrate the excellence of local businesses and it is because of this element that we are calling for organisations across Malta and Gozo to represent – and prove – their capabilities on a European stage.”

Adrian Tripp, CEO of the European Business Awards, said: “Over the past four years we’ve received an incredibly high standard of entries from businesses that are passionate about their role in driving the economy of the nation they reside in. This year we’ve partnered with HSBC Commercial Banking and we’re encouraging businesses across the EU to assert their point of difference at a time when global economic competition is proving tougher than ever before. For European businesses to thrive and stay at the forefront of economic growth it is vital that we invest in enterprise, innovation and excellence.”

Past judges for the European Business Awards have included Wim Kok, former Dutch Prime Minister; Petar Stoyanov, former President of Bulgaria; and Emil Constantinescu, former President of Romania. José María Aznar, former Prime Minister of Spain said: “I have the highest opinion of the European Business Awards.

“It is a great initiative to promote the values and principles we believe in: liberty, democracy, freedom of speech, open markets and open societies.”
