Sharing Transport costs when going to Gozo

Malta Independent Tuesday, 22 June 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Since the 1960’s my relatives have been proud to own a property in Gozo (and I plan to retire on this beautiful island with its friendly Gozitans).

However, one aspect is giving a bad name to the island – the exorbitant fares from the airport to the Gozo Ferry. In my experience over nearly 20 years, if you share a taxi/minibus with other foreign visitors, you expect to share the cost of the transport.

The fare to Gozo seems to be the only one in the world where one pays the full fare, and so do the other foreign visitors in the same vehicle!

No wonder there is a haemorrhaging of tourists from Gozo to Spain, Croatia, Estonia etc, and no impoverished Gozitan car hire companies! Doesn’t make the fare fair, though. Greed gives Gozo a bad name.
