The Scissor Sisters felt “sure Isle of MTV was going to be a great night” after they saw the Granaries, where the concert was going to be held, bass guitarist, Babydaddy, told The Malta Independent in an interview prior to the concert
The band is also good friends with Kelis; “who by the way is looking great”, he quipped; and friendly with Kid Rock, so this was another factor which promised it would be a great night.
As the sun beat down, Babydaddy, one of the two original band members, joked that he wanted to move to Malta, admitting that the whole band had loved the island. “It’s so ancient”, he said, adding that the band members are very into history.
Besides the feeling of relaxation combined with performing, the band wanted to be part of Isle of MTV to give something back to an MTV which is still all about the music, since the American MTV tends to focus on reality shows, he explained.
These last few weeks have been incredibly busy for the band; what with Glastonbury and promoting the release of their third album, Night Work. The band’s last album came out in 2006, so this was a new experience, waiting to see how it would be received.
Still the reaction to the album has been incredible, he said, and there was so little negative feedback. This is all the more important since the band is such a divisive one. This is good since the band does not work hard to produce mediocre music, Babydaddy said.
Speaking of Glastonbury his face lights up, as he reminisces about the first time performing there. It was a question of everything happening at the same time; the band performed at Glastonbury and the next day it found its album had gone to number one.
This year the band performed with Kylie Minogue, who Babydaddy refers to as a “kindred spirit”. The band really loves her material, he said, and is looking forward to her new album.
The one question he is tired of being asked, he said, is why the band scrapped the album before this one, as this was not the case. The band writes a lot of songs, he said, and automatically this means it throws out a lot.
After the Isle of MTV concert the Scissor Sisters has a packed-up calendar of events, he said, with festivals in Europe, the UK, Australia, Japan and the US.
