I have read the article by Anthony Zarb Dimech ‘The Malta Fighter Plane Fund – Malta 1940, which was published in your newspaper on Saturday 17 July 2010, and wish to add some information that has obviously been excluded.

For your information and also to your readers, the Hon. E.J.Valenzia Esq L.P was President, A.C Crockford Esq Hon. Gen Secretary, and J. Cassar was Hon. Treasurer of the said fund. I am also in possession of a photograph of these three gentlemen together taken in 1940.

Hon. Treasurer Joseph Cassar even temporarily left the family business to work and raise these funds for this said cause. I have also in my possession photographs of the two Spitfires respectively named ‘Malta & Ghawdex’. These funds were collected through the hard work and dedication of Mr Cassar and his two colleagues from 30 July 1940 to 29 October 1940.

The first wooden Collection Box was donated by the undersigned to the War Museum St Elmo on the instance of the Late Philip Vella.

May I also take the opportunity to inform your readers that the Anglo Maltese League again collected 7525.15 sterling for the Brave seamen who lost their lives to bring food to Malta – more commonly known as ‘The Malta convoy Fund’.

The Late Joseph Cassar was again the Hon. Treasurer of this Fund.

Whilst this letter is intended to set the record straight, it is also fitting to give credit where due to the dedication and memory of the late Joseph Cassar.
