Reference is made to the item “Bungling Anglu” under the heading “Gentlemen, explain yourselves” by Daphne Caruana Galizia (TMIS, 1 August).

In her article, the writer in question makes a number of insinuations whereby she attributes to me a series of what she perceives as possible improper motives behind my decision to appeal the judgment of the Court of Magistrates in the case Police v Pierre Bartolo.

I totally and categorically reject her malicious and contemptible insinuations. There’s nothing to explain. The facts speak for themselves.

These are the following. The appeal in question was filed in the exercise of my functions under the Criminal Code. In terms of article 91 of the Constitution, those functions are exercised and were exercised by me in my individual judgment free from the direction or control of any other person or authority. The reasons for the appeal are the ones laid down in the appeal application.

I reserve the right to take any action, civil or criminal, which I consider appropriate under the circumstances.
