Most organisations who form part of the Animal Rights Coalition would like to thank Resources and Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino for recognising the need of a well-equipped and much needed animal after-care centre. We look forward to the day when its doors are open and it is up and running.

This ministry clearly is one of the few that communicates with the people, in this case, those who have been working for more humane animal conditions for years. It is a ministry that is not too proud to ask for advice and opinions and we therefore hope that we can keep this relationship working.

Considering this, it is unfortunate that Minister Pullicino’s department cannot always take action of its own accord. On Tuesday 13 July, officers from the Animal Welfare Department were seen taking measurements at Valletta Waterfront, which is only one of the many areas where the karozzini horses stand and wait for custom.

These measurements were taken to erect temporary shades for the horses. The ongoing saga between MITC and supporters for these shelters must by a fact known, by now, to all. Since then, no further developments have occurred. The horses are still waiting in scorching sun, with neither temporary nor permanent shelters, nor water or drainage facilities. Temporary shade could be of great relief to these long suffering horses till the solid structures are erected.

A minister with compassion shows a strength equal to none and earns respect where others achieve contempt. This earned respect, though, is only there if plans started are followed through and completed. We look forward to the completion of these plans.
