I would like to express my solidarity with Dr Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando regarding the divorce issue and my disappointment at Dr Lawrence Gonzi’s decision to, once again, sweep this important matter under the carpet.

So Dr Gonzi’s reason for his decision was that divorce is an important matter that requires a referendum. Besides the fact that I don’t believe this is the case, there have been other things which the man in the street was strongly against, but was totally ignored. One example was the Renzo Piano plan for an open air theatre, which most Maltese were vehemently against.

Not introducing divorce will not stop marriages failing, and couples seeking happiness and a second chance with other partners.

The ‘fact’ that children will suffer is not exactly a reality, as you can ask any child that hearing their parents continuously fighting is much worse, and really children are tougher than we make them out to be.

As long as both parents love them, and act responsibly towards them, they will adapt, just as they have had to adapt to the negative life they have to go home to when the parents have an unhappy marriage.
