I refer to Pamela Hansen’s article entitled “We just don’t have enough road” (TMIS, 29 August).

If Ms Hansen read the Highway Code, she would know that the speed limit, out of the urban areas in Malta and Gozo, is 80kph. This speed is within the reach of my own 998cc mini at the higher end of second gear, and with only 2,500rpm showing in fourth (top) gear. 80kph (50mph) is by no means fast, especially for someone lucky enough to have owned a decent SAAB with a top speed of 180kph as Ms Hansen did.

The elderly often get confused between kilometres per hour and miles per hour and this is one of the many reasons why anyone over 60 should be regularly retested in order for Transport Malta to be able to ban thousands of us oldies who are, quite frankly, unfit to drive.

For the record, the restrictive 60kph (37.8mph) speed cameras will not be brought in line with the 80kph maximum speed allowed. Nor will the 70kph limit on the Burmarrad road be lowered, or the 80kph limit through the Mriehel Bypass camera be lowered.

Vehicles have to be kept moving at a proper rate on the open road to work efficiently and allow their drivers to stand a chance of getting from A to B with the least, not most inconvenience.
