The Work of seven artists

Malta Independent Sunday, 12 September 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Seven innovative artists will be coming together to work on an interactive photography and video exhibition on 24 September. The event, which will take place at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, will run until 16 October. The artists taking part are Matthew Grima Conell, Nicole Cuschieri, Elisa Von Brockdorff, Kenneth Borg, Aldo Cauchi Savona, Maria Bravo and Christine Cutajar. The launch night on the 24th starts at 8pm and complementary wine will be served by Marsovin Wine, proud sponsors of artistic events. The exhibition coincides with the 10th anniversary of St James Cavalier, which opened its doors for the first time on 22 September 2000.

This exhibition examines different artistic interpretations of a poem about love, absence and obsession. The initial phase of the project was to give the text to a selection of professional photographers and videographers with a request to interpret the text creatively. On the deadline given, the artists submitted their proposals and seven were selected, based on their innovation, imagination and dedication. Using photography, video, 3D materials, animation, soundscapes, projections, sculpture and dance, the artists will display interactive and innovative displays that will take the audience on a personal journey through the different worlds they have created.

Using a trick of illusion, Aldo Cauchi Savona presents an installation where the viewer can peep into a box and see a dark and earthly digitally manipulated photograph of a person with skin the texture of tree-bark. The man’s feet are morphed into the chair and extend as tree roots. Occasionally leaves will fall from the man and gather on the ground. Christine Cutajar has created a sculpture made from raw and dead tree branches forming a chair that invites the viewer to interpret the various abstract photographs dancing around it. Mary Bravo, a Spanish filmmaker has created a short film displayed around drip bags, symbolising the creativity that can drain a person and the impact creativity can have on people and what is then left behind. Elisa Von Brockdorf’s installation consists of a repetition of chairs in an intimate and chaotic space, which the audience have to walk through, creating the feeling of being inside an obsessive and cluttered mind. Using soundscapes and symbolism, Kenneth Borg presents A Tale In Three Acts displaying three phases of human emotions from an emotional state of intense romantic desire for another person to a stage of extreme emotions related to grief and mourning. Collaborating with Noel Zammit, Matthew Grima Connell brings to life the audiovisual hallucinations of a heartbroken widow, using animation, video and physical theatre. Nicole Cuschieri has created two short video clips featuring a dancer conveying her fears through an expressive dance that is displayed in two interactive displays symbolising the ego and the alter ego.

The exhibition is sponsored by the Malta Council for Culture & the Arts, Studio Seven and Marsovin Wines.

The opening times are from 9am to 5pm on Monday and Tuesday and from 9am to 9pm from Wednesday till Sunday. Entrance is free
