Youth Football: Seven-goal thriller

This action-packed game produced seven goals and surely pleased the sizeable crowd present at the Luxol Ground. After a balanced first period Mellieha were the better side after the restart as they created much more occasions than Attard.

Attard were the first to threaten. Paul Toledo served Gianluca Simiana with a cross from the right and Mellieha keeper Joseph Caruana saved his close-range shot in two attempts. Then Robert Muscat served Toledo with a through ball but Jamie Vella foiled him with a timely intervention.

In a Mellieha reaction Ryan Cutajar served Jack Vella in the area but Attard keeper Igor Schembri foiled him with a timely sortie. Then Jack Vella served Julian Agius in the area and Schembri saved his effort in two attempts.

Mellieha opened the score in the 11th minute when Jack Vella served Agius in the area and he scored with a low shot. Two minutes later Attard “ Jean Borg had a shot cleared from over the line.

In the first action after the restart Mangion was fouled outside the area and Agius missed Mellieha’s bar by inches from the free kick.

At the other end, Agius served substitute Luke Camilleri with a perfect cross but he miscued his shot from a very ideal position and a good chance was lost. 

Attard equalised in the 43rd minute when Jacob Farrugia was fouled outside the area and Jonathan Cutajar scored a beauty with a rising shot from the free kick.

Two minutes later they scored a second goal as substitute Jan Magro dribbled past a defender and scored with a hard grounder from outside the area.

The score became 2-2 as Mellieha equalised in the 60th minute as Jacob Farrugia dribbled past a defender and served Ryan Cutajar in the area who netted with a hard grounder. 

In the 67th minute the score became 3-2 for Mellieha when Jack Vella served Ryan Cutajar in the area and as Attard keeper came out of his charge he tripped Cutajar and the same player converted from the penalty spot.

Two minutes later it became 4-2 when Agius served Jack Vella in the area and he scored with a low shot.

In the third minute of added time Attard reduced the gap as they won a corner kick on the right flank and from the flag kick by Kurt Agius, Jean Borg headed the ball in past Mellieha keeper Joseph Caruana.
