Nine Maltese drivers, all members of Grimaldi Team Malta, will be participaqting in the third round of the Campionato Siciliano di Velocita in Pista at the fabulous Autodromo Valle dei Templi at Racalmuto in Sicily this weekend. The team will as always be managed by Maltese veteran driver Joe Anastasi.

You could be excused for thinking that the Malta entry this time was a Zammit family gathering, with FOUR family members racing and plenty of others present for moral support.

John Zammit makes a welcome return to Racalmuto with his Group S Lotus Elise, having obtained favourable results on his last visit. Brother Alex is also taking part with his new Radical Pro Sport Kawasaki in the Sports Prototype class, and Alex’s son Matthew will be hoping to repeat his recent Cesaro success with his Van Diemen Suzuki in the very competitive class for 1000cc single seater Formula cars.

And of course don’t under estimate young Zach who returns with a revamped Ralt RT37 Honda in the “big race” for single seaters.

2009 Circuit champion Joshua Anastasi hasn’t had much luck at Racalmuto this season so he will be hoping this will be “third time lucky”. His supercharged JBR-4 Kawasaki is entered in the “big race” for single seaters too, as is Jamie Sammut’s Reynard Cosworth 2000. A number of top notch Italians are expected to take on the Grimaldi Team Malta drivers in this class.

Alan Curmi will be looking at getting his own back on Italian Domenico Cubeda in the 1600 class. Both drive Suzuki 1500 engined Radicals, and Jason Muscat will be making it three Malta Radicals this weekend at Racalmuto with his Kawasaki 1200 entered Clubsport.

And last but by no means least Johann Spiteri will be hoping for more reliability from his Jedi Yamaha, thus being able to challenge the many competitors in the popular 1000cc class.

Qualifying starts on Saturday at 2pm after a morning of free practice when the competitors will have been busy setting up their cars as well as possible for the conditions. There are two races on Sunday, both of which carry valuable championship points. The morning race will be of 6 laps duration whilst the afternoon race will be the usual ten lapper.

“We’ve never had nine Malta cars racing at Racalmuto, so the many Maltese spectators who will be making the trip to Sicily this weekend will have plenty to cheer. The competition is growing with every championship round, but so is the standard of the Grimaldi Team Malta drivers and their racing cars.
