Organisers Withdraw job offer to drugs cheat

London 2012 officials say a job offer to a former Olympic weightlifter has been withdrawn after they discovered he once received a two-year ban for being a drugs cheat.

Sevdalin Marinov, who won gold for Bulgaria in the Seoul Games in 1988, was set to take up a position as technical operations manager for the weightlifting competition when the London Organising Committee found out he had tested positive for steroids in 1995.

A statement from LOCOG says “we decided that this was not an appropriate appointment to make, given the role he will have within the sport competition.”

Marinov also had a life ban, handed to him in 2003 when his flatmate was convicted of importing banned drugs, overturned four years later.
