In the first encounter for the First Division Knockout for the weekend, Dingli Swallows were hoping to start off their first match with a victory while Mqabba were looking to build upon their victory against Pieta’ hotspurs last week.

After a drab first 20 minutes, the first shot came from David Azzopardi from outside the box which went just over the bar. That was the prelude to the goal which came just a minute later when a cross by Debattista found Mazitelli who headed home with aplomb. Ten minutes later,

Mqabba could have doubled after Pierre Grima’s cross just missed Mazitelli in the box. Dingli’s only real move of the half came on 45 minutes when Farrugia shot just wide from a good position.

Dingli had a good opportunity to equalize on 58 minutes when Sammut chipped forward towards Ciappara but the forward failed to control the ball properly. But it was Mqabba who doubled on 65 minutes when a cross by Magro found Muscat who drilled the ball past Farrugia to seal the encounter.

Mqabba could have made it three on 82 minutes but Magro could not conclude after a fine cross by Curmi. The goal arrived on 84 minutes when a corner by Cuschieri found Mazitelli who headed home to close off the match once and for all.
