Golf – Ryder Cup: Europe, US Scramble at water-logged Ryder Cup

Malta Independent Saturday, 2 October 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

After a long rain delay, the Americans have rallied for a narrow Ryder Cup lead at the end of the first day.

None of the four matches was completed, but the US team was leading in two and all-square in another. Europe was leading one match, a change from the situation when play was halted mid-morning because drenching showers made Celtic Manor unplayable.

Europe was leading three matches before a delay of more than seven hours seemed to sap the home team's momentum. It also prompted officials to make a drastic schedule change, hoping to avoid the first Monday finish in Ryder Cup history.

The new schedule calls for six alternate shot matches in the second session instead of the normal four, and two alternate shot and four better ball matches in the third session. That means all players will be out on the course for both sessions.

Officials said both captains agreed to the changes.

The weather forecast for tomorrow is for rain, though, meaning there still could be a Monday finish.
