Justin Haber, Andre Schembri Recalled to national squad

Malta Independent Saturday, 2 October 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Ferencvaros players Justin Haber and Andre Schembri yesterday earned a recall by national coach John Buttigieg for next week’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Georgia in Tbilisi.

Haber has returned to full action after injury while Schembri is playing on top of his form with the Hungarian club, also scoring a hat-trick in their last league match the past weekend.

The squad, however, does not include Daniel Bogdanovic of Sheffield United, who is suspended, while Kenneth Scicluna of Valletta is still recovering from a hernia operation.

Buttigieg said yesterday he was more or less satisfied with the form of the players and although most of those in the squad against Latvia have retained their places, this does not mean that the door is closed for any other player or players who might show that they are ready to join the squad.

The coach believes that this match, like all the others, will be difficult. He said: “Georgia have made tremendous improvement. They have started this campaign with two prestigious draws against Greece and Israel. But with more attention and concentration from my players, I believe we will soon be reaping dividends.

“We had problems with lack of ball possession in the first match against Israel. But against Latvia, we showed improvement. If only we turned the chances we created – four or five – into goals, we would have obtained a much better result,” he claimed.

Buttigieg added the team has to forget about those huge disappointments and look forward with optimism. He added: “After all, there were also some positives, especially in the match against Latvia.”

The squad is the following:

Goalkeepers: Justin Haber (Ferencvaros), Andrew Hogg (Valletta), Mario Muscat (Hibs) and Anthony Curmi (Tarxien R.).

Defenders: Andrei Agius (AS Melfi), Jonathan Caruana (Valletta), Massimo Grima (Hamrun S.), Edward Herrera (Hibs), Carlo Mamo (Marsaxlokk), Joseph Zerafa (Birkirkara).

Midfielders: Shaun Bajada, Trevor Cilia and Paul Fenech (Birkirkara), Roderick Briffa, Jamie Pace and Kevin Sammut (all Valletta), Ryan Fenech (Hamrun S.), Gareth Sciberras (Marsaxlokk).

Strikers: Andrew Cohen (Hibs), Michael Mifsud, Andre Schembri (Ferencvaros), Ivan Woods (Floriana).
