Maltese top Double Trap shooter William Chetcuti will be eyeing a medal at today’s singles competition at the Commonwealth Games.

Chetcuti seems to be in fine form, taking into consideration his performance yesterday when he took part along with Nathan Lee Xuereb in the pairs competition.

The Maltese pair could only finish sixth with a total of 171 targets as England took the gold on 189 – a Games record - India the silver and Malaysia the bronze on 185.

Chetcuti hit a super first round of 49 and a second of 46, but it was not Xuereb’s day yesterday as he had a poor first round of 35, though improving to 41 in the second round. Those results kept the Malta pairs team far from the medals.

However, it is obvious that Chetcuti’s results yesterday indicate he has a good chance of getting a medal. In fact, after the first round, he was occupying joint second place with England’s Stevan Walton with India’s Sodhi Ronjan in first place with a maximum 50.

Even after the second round, when he hit 46, Chetcuti remained second best even if there were six others who hit 47. If one had to consider the grand total from 100 shots, then Chetcuti would have been in second place alone on 95 targets, just one adrift of England’s Stevan Walton, who was on 96.

Another shooter, William Vella, was in action yesterday in the singles 10m air-rifle event. But he finished 16th and last with a score of 567-27.

India’s Gagan Narang won the gold medal with a Games record score of 600-50. Another Indian, Abhinav Bindra, won silver, and England’s Kenny Parr took the bronze.

In the Lawn Bowls field, Malta was again unlucky in the Triples Men Group A competition when they lost to India after another tie-break. It was the third time the Maltese lost on a tie-break at these Games.

The result was 1-1 with India 23-17 on top in the grand total, but the home side narrowly won the tie-break 3-2.
