KMS Skolasport, a programme run by the Kunsill Malti għall-iSport has launched its new programme for kids and adults. This highly successful programme will be sponsored for the twelfth year running by Kellogg’s.
KMS Skolasport offers various programme modules running from Saturday 23 October 2010 until Friday 27 May 2011.
The Foundation module is open to children aged between 4 and 6 years old whilst the Participation module is open to children aged between 7 and 10 years and the Performance module is open to children aged between 9 years and 16 years.
Activities for these modules are mainly held on a Saturday morning and adults are also invited to support their children and join in the fun by taking part in the adult activity class held concurrently with the children’s activity.
The Foundation module covers the development of movement and literacy.
This programme is concerned with ensuring that all children learn basic movement skills, enjoy being active and develop knowledge and understanding of their bodies and how they move following a specific syllabus based on: ABCs (agility, balance, coordination and speed), Educational gymnastics, dance and fitness, Swimming and Athletics.
As a result of this programme children should then be sufficiently motivated and ‘movement literate’ to participate in specific sports and start developing their sports performance.
Parents may choose to send their children to one of six locations namely the Tal-Qroqq Sports Complex, the Marsa Sports Complex, the Cottonera Sports Complex, St Benedict’s Sports Complex (Kirkop), St Claire’s College (Pembroke), and the Tal-Qroqq Sports Complex.
The Participation module provides a variety of sport activities making sport more accessible.
The key role in this programme is to introduce children to a broad range of activities so that they are sufficiently proficient and knowledgeable to have the confidence and competence to make the choice to participate in sport.
Up till now Skolasport has tied this programme with the 8yrs – 10yrs age group.
The Performance module strives towards improving standards once youngsters have undergone (ideally) both stages and are in a position to choose their sport discipline. Skolasport has been giving this opportunity to youngsters between the 11 to 16 age group.
However, this is now being extended to children from 9 years of age who have undergone the foundation and participation programmes and now have the option to choose a particular sport.
This programme offers a wide variety of sport activities to choose from including modern dance, weightlifting, volleyball, badminton, traditional karate, football, athletics, basketball, baseball, judo, rugby, squash, swimming, handball, BMX, bowling, gymnastics, karting, sailing and tennis.
This year’s programme will see the introduction of a number of new disciplines include Aikido, Billiards & Snooker, Canoeing and Kendo.
This is Kellogg’s 12th year sponsoring KMS Skolasport. Kellogg’s is the world renowned producer of breakfast cereals which give adults and children necessary nutrients and vitamins to kick start their day.
“Kellogg’s is a firm believer in encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from a young age. A healthy and balanced diet together with regular exercise helps improve a person’s health and well being.
The sponsorship of the KMS Skolasport programme further emphasises our commitment towards promoting a healthy lifestyle,” said a Kellogg’s spokesperson.
