Malta Independent Wednesday, 13 October 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Malta won third place out of 21 teams in Palermo when taking part at the Grand Prix Sicilia which this year was held in conjunction with the Coppa Italia of Wrestling.

Although competing with only three wrestlers these managed to score enough points to leave 18 teams behind.

All three wrestlers reached their respective weight finals, namely Adam Vella (60kg), David Zammit (66kg) and veteran wrestler Abraham Vassallo (84kg) thus all obtaining silver medals. In all the Maltese competitors scored seven wins.

A silver medal could have been exchanged for gold if Vassallo did not give a walk over in his final bout as he suffered a slight injury in the semi final and did not risk not taking part in the Commonwealth Games in India.

Adam Vella managed to score three wins while Zammit and Vassallo won two each. On the other hand David Zammit kept showing improvement in international competitions.

National coach Jesmond Giordimaina, a former top Maltese international wrestler led the Maltese contingent.
