Malta Independent Thursday, 14 October 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Malta’s Darren Vella shot two very good rounds of 24 each on the final day of the skeet singles competition yesterday to improve his position by five places – from 18th after the first three rounds on Tuesday to 11th yesterday.

Considering everything it was the second round that cost him a place in the barrage. In fact his score included four 24s and a poor round of 19. Had he been consistent in that round, he would have finished on 120, the same as the fourth, fifth and sixth placed shooters in the field. Instead he finished 11th with a total of 115.

Malta’s other competitor, Clive Farrugia, remained in 25th place after rounds of 19 and 23 on the final day. That gave him an overall total of 104. He had scored 21, 19 and 22 on Tuesday in the opening three rounds.

Meanwhile, in the women’s singles 10m air pistol competition, Eleanor Bezzina was making her debut in such competitions, finishing 20th from among 24 competitors.

She scored rounds of 89, 92, 88 and 91 for a total of 360.

William Vella took part in the 50m rifle prone (men’s singles) and could only finish 35th from 38 competitors. His scores in the six rounds were 82, 95, 97, 94 97 and 96 for a grand total of 561.
