Weightlifting: Malta Team for Med Cup named

The Malta weightlifting association has organised its second selection competition for the Mediterranean cup tournament that will soon be organised in Malta this month.

This competition was packed with action since six national records were broken.

Clint Grech finished on top. He snatched 90kg and clean and jerk 117kg collecting 171 points. This meant a personal best in the total for this promising lifter.

Veteran lifter Noel Coleiro was second with a total of 221kg for 261points.

Christian Saliba produced a stunning performance to finish third with a national record in all three lifts in the junior 94kg category with a 90kg snatch, 120kg clean and jerk thus having a total of 210kg. This is a very good performance considering the Mediterranean Cup is just a few days away.

In a respectable fourth position was Stephen Borg with a 90kg snatch, 117kg clean and jerk and a total of 207kg for 239 points. Emmanuel Camilleri was fifth with 70kg snatch, 85kg clean and jerk, thus finishing with a total of 155kg for 221points. Sixth was Ryan Agius who performed three personal bests with 71kg in the snatch, 88kg clean and jerk and a total of 159kg. Rodmar Pulis followed with 209 points. Simon Brincat took part in the competition registering a 70kg snatch and 90kg clean and jerk.

In the female section Nicole Gatt continued her positive performances with three national records in the youth 44kg category with 30kg in the snatch, 38kg in the clean and jerk thus totaling 68kg finishing with 112 points. In second position came Kimberly Coleiro with 35kg snatch 45kg clean and jerk earning 86 points.

The Malta team that will compete in the Mediterranean Cup this month will be composed of Clint Grech, Noel Coleiro, Christian Saliba and Nicole Gatt.
