More than 50 young sailors coming from the Birzebbuga Sailing Club, the Young Sailors Club and the VSC, participated in this regatta to show their skills along the Sliema coast in Force 3 to 4 winds.
The successful organisation of the whole event was the combined effort of a group of dedicated people headed by Capt Richard Gabriele VSC Club Commodore. Peter Dimech, was the Race Officer. The VSC ladies circle were there to ensure that all the exhausted young sailors were well catered for with food and other assistance on their return to the club.
Capt Richard Gabriele and Gerald Portanier, Commodore and Vice Commodore respectively of the VSC, handed out the awards during the presentation ceremony held on Sunday at the closing of the event.
Sailing is without doubt becoming one of the most popular sea sport on the island, both in summer and in winter.
It has also been included in Skola Sport and Skola Sajf schemes organized by the Kunsill Malti Ghall-Isport, thus giving a great number of children the opportunity to practise this exhilarating sport.
Youngsters and also adults get hands-on experience in dinghy sailing throughout the year guided by experienced instructors. Boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 16 can download a form from the KMS website: www.sportmalta.org.mt and enrol for the winter scheme.
