Over the last few days Gozitan side Kercem Ajax and Floriana FC cemented their historical ties with a friendly match and a reception for players and supporters in Gozo. The friendly, which took place at the Sannat Ground, was played over three 30-minure periods with Floriana scoring twice in each period.

The ties between the two sides go back to 1953 when Kercem Ajax was formed. The Gozitan club acquired its first kits from the Floriana side and adopted the name “Ajax” in honour of the great Ajax side of the time.

Kercem Ajax have been playing in green and white ever since. Over the years a number of Floriana stalwarts like Tony Vella, Tony Dalli, Pullu Demanuele, Lolly Borg and Lolly Debattista donned the Kercem jerseys as guest players.

During a reception at the Kercem Ajax FC premises Floriana president Johann Said and his Kercem counterpart Gino Mizzi announced that the clubs intend to sign a twinning agreement and that a number of Kercem players will have the opportunity to train with Floriana’s first team under Kercem’s former coach Todor Raykov.
