Tennis: San Michel Malta Open Junior Championship

The San Michel Malta Open Junior Tennis Championship was held at the Marsa Sports Club.

This tournament is sanctioned by the Malta Tennis Federation.

Bernard Cassar Torreggiani  once again proved to be Malta’s top junior by winning the U 16 and U 14 age group. In the U 16  final he beat Patrick Georgiev while in the U 14 he beat his brother Matthew. In the boys U 12 and U10 Ben Farrugia showed excellent concentration and determination in winning both events. In the U 12 final the crowd present witnessed a really exciting game . Ben managed to beat  Zack Ciappara in 3 close sets. In the U 10 Ben beat the talented Miguel Galea.

The girls events were also very keenly contested. The U 14 event was won by Rebecca Mccarthy beating Georgie Farrugia Sacco in the final.

This final was a very good match with Rebecca coming back from 3-0 down in the third set to win the set 6-3. The U 16 final saw Georgie Farrugia Sacco on the winning end this time, She beat Alexia Cassar in a very close match.

The first two sets were shared and the third set was won by Georgie  6-4. The U 10 girls event was won by the up and coming youngster Helene Pelicano. The players in this event were placed in a group of 4 players and was played on a round robin basis. Helene managed to win all 3 matches . The other 3 players were runner-up Martina Demanuele, Emily Lightfoot and Nicole Meli Bellizzi.

The boys doubles U 14 was won by Bernard and Matthew Cassar Torreggiani beating Mark Schranz and Patrick Georgiev in the final.

The presentation of prizes was held on the no 1 court right after the last matches. Present for the presentation was, Dr. David Farrugia Sacco President of the Malta Tennis Federation, as well as organisers Antoinette  Pace, Louise Dowling and Anna Gusman.
