San Gwann were the better outfit during the game and fully deserved the verdict as they were more methodical in their approach and passing. Qormi tried very hard to operate on the break.
Following this match Qormi have only one point from three games while San Gwann are on seven points from four games.
The early pressure came from San Gwann. Dylan Galea served Dilon Borda on the left flank and the ball was deflected to a corner after his cross. The same player then served Nicholas Buckle on the right flank and the ball was cleared to safety following his cross and Buckle, after beating a defender, served Borda in the area and he missed the upright with his shot.
San Gwann forged ahead in the 6th minute when Pace was fouled just outside the area and Galea scored a beauty with a rising shot from the free kick.
In a San Gwann reaction, Buckle was fouled on the left flank, the free kick was taken by Justin Agius and Qormi keeper Neil Smart saved a Pace header to a corner.
Qormi equalised in the 19th minute when Jean C Azzopardi dribbled past an opponent on the right flank and crossed the ball in the area. Dylan Pirotta shot the ball into the net past San Gwann keeper Mark Vella.
In another Qormi action minutes later Vella saved in two attempts a shot by Pirotta after the latter was put through by Christian Frendo.
The pressure from San Gwann resumed. Agius drove slightly out after he was put through by Dylan Azzopardi and Smart saved a header from inside the area by Borda after a cross-pass by Pace.
Two minutes after the restart San Gwann scored a second goal as Karl Mizzi dribbled past an opponent on the left edge of the area and crossed to Borda in the area who made no mistake from close range.
In another action by San Gwann Buckle served Pace in the area with a cross and he headed slightly out. Galea drove slightly over the bar from a free kick.
Smart saved on Buckle after a square pass by Mizzi, and the goalie also saved a free kick by Galea after Pace was fouled outside the area.
Borda then missed the upright from inside the area after a Pace through ball and Smart had to dive at Borda’s feet in order to smother the ball after another Pace through ball.
Three minutes before the end San Gwann put the issue beyond doubt as they scored a third goal. A one-two between Pace and Borda finished with the latter entering the area and scoring with a low shot.
In the last action before the end, Smart saved Matthew Micallef’s effort in two attempts.
