Hamburg played a goalless draw against Bayern Munich last night.

Neither side managed to dominate for any sustained periods during the match, meaning a topsy-turvy encounter which produced chances at both ends. Jonathan Pitroipa spurned the best of them inside the final ten minutes when he struck a post, but despite some late pressure from the reigning champions, a point apiece was a fair reflection.

Bayern will of course be the more frustrated as they continue to languish in mid-table.

The visitors displayed several good combinations heading into the final stages, but as the Bavarians failed to find an end product it was the hosts who almost nicked it at the end.

Bayern keeper Butt had to react quickly to get to the ball first ahead of first Petric and then Trochowski minutes later, but the Bayern custodian was helpless as Petric sent Pitroipa into the clear on 81 minutes. However, the Burkina Faso international’s placed finish came back off the post, leaving both sides to play out for the point.

The weekend features two other games involving top clubs, both tomorrow. Borussia Dortmund travel to Hoffenheim and Mainz visit Bayer Leverkusen.

Dortmund lead Mainz on goal difference with both clubs even with 21 points. Leverkusen have 15 points and Hoffenheim 14.

“We are enjoying our run but we still haven’t achieved anything so early in the season,” Dortmund striker Lucas Barrios said.

Dortmund’s young team has won seven of eight games and is atop the standings for the first time since they last won the title in 2002. Mainz’s unbeaten run ended with a home loss to Hamburg last week.

In other games today, Eintracht Frankfurt host Schalke, Werder Bremen visit Borussia Moenchengladbach, Freiburg play Kaiserslautern, Cologne travel to Hannover and Nuremberg face Wolfsburg.
