Stuttering And ambitions

Malta Independent Sunday, 31 October 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

As a PWS (person who stutters), I enjoyed Stephen Calleja’s article “Stuttering should not hinder ambitions”, which I read as it was sent to me in an e-list for PWS to which I belong.

I could not agree more with the article in that early intervention for children with a speech therapist is a must. Parents need to be better informed so that children can be brought to a speech therapist early on. While it is true that 75 per cent of children who stutter eventually stop stuttering, kids who go to speech therapy have an advantage.

I liked the way that the article mentioned some of the famous people who stutter. The website of The Stuttering Foundation (www.stutteringhelp.org) has an incredible list of people who stutter. I feel that a list like this gives hope and inspiration to young people coping with stuttering. Also, the site has a section of “Celebrity Corner” articles on many of these PWS that are in-depth looks at the person and how they dealt with stuttering. The website of The Stuttering Foundation, a non-profit charity, has many free resources such as streaming videos and downloadable brochures.

I am sure that your article helped many people who stutter, especially parents and children.
